Ice Cream Scooper – Little Italy $16.30 + $9.78 average tips per hour!
Position Summary/Objective of job:
Scoopers create happiness through moments of wonder for our guests in a way that is unparalleled, they do this by facilitating the experience that guests have with Salt & Straw. The Scooper takes our guests on taste adventures by sampling and scooping ice cream and narrating the journey to create memorable experiences. The Scooper creates and maintains a welcoming environment by being kind, patient and open and this contributes to the legendary hospitality that builds community and leads Salt & Straw to be a fan favorite.
Essential Functions:
- Guest Engagement. Scoopers constantly interact with guests while they wait in line, when they enter the shop, when getting their ice cream, at the registers and when they exit the premises.
- Scoop the perfect scoop for our guests. Scooping ice cream for 2-4 hours, multiple times per shift.
- Cash handling. Being able to accurately ring-up a purchase, operate our POS and registers. Be able to receive cash and give the accurate amount back.
- Make waffle cones. Mix batter, label batter, store batter, make cones with waffle iron, store cones, label cones, keep station clean as it is in FOH, open and close station.
- Follow shop standards and maintain shop cleanliness. This can include washing dishes, constructing and serving products according to recipes and/or service specs, cleaning facilities (floors, walls, bathrooms, freezers), uphold organization standards, put away orders according to standards and product maps.
- Restock the shop supplies. Scoopers restock retail, pull tubs to temper, restock the pint freezer, restock paper goods, restock cones, waffle batter, spoons, etc. multiple times a shift.
- Consolidate tubs of ice cream and replenish from the walk-in freezer.
- Pack online orders and ensure we are packing or scooping the correct order.
- Promptly answer the phones and give excellent customer service over the phone.
- Line host. Greet guests, redirect the line, answer questions, explain different ways to experience our shop, encourage ordering online, skip the line to buy pints, etc.
- Float. This is a combination of responsibilities (dishes, lobby cleaning, restocking, etc.) that aid in ensuring that those in the scooping rotation always have what they need to continue scooping.
- Tasting/sampling a scoop of ice cream daily (including, when possible, different flavors of ice cream, including flavors that might not be the Team Member’s personal preference), in order to be able to better communicate to customers why they might enjoy each flavor.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Place and remove line stanchions. Move heavy stanchions from inside to outside the shop and set them per diagram.
- Audit invoice and put away large orders of ice cream in the walk-in freezer.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Food handlers card is required within 30 days of start of employment.
- 0-1 years of work experience.
- Must be able to work 1 weekend day every week, and at least 3 shifts a week.
- Available to work holidays.
- Available to work at least one closing shift a week with the potential to work as late as 1 am.
- Must be 16 years or older.
Knowledge and Critical Skills:
- Excellent communication skills are a requirement. Being able to effectively communicate with guests, the rest of the team, as well as LODs to ensure a smooth and successful shift is critical.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to cooperate well and adapt to change.
- Scoopers must be able to have a conversation, provide a high level of customer service and talk about our flavors, and give samples comfortably. These positive and upbeat interactions with guests are required throughout a shift.
- Must be able to learn about and discuss our standard flavors and seasonal flavors.
- Good spatial awareness is important due to the constrained space behind the counter.
- Fluency in English.

Salt & Straw offers an employer-sponsored Commuter Benefit, administered by ALICE. This benefit allows you to set aside pre-tax dollars to use for certain work-related commuting expenses. These expenses include qualified parking costs, mass transit expenses, and ride sharing.
The IRS establishes a maximum amount of commuter assistance benefits that a Team Member can exclude from income for tax purposes. The limits for 2023 are $300 per month for qualified parking, and $300 per month for mass transit and ride sharing.
